While asbestos exposure has been associated with several diseases, there are two main ones, asbestosis and mesothelioma. Asbestosis is a lung disease that causes difficulty breathing. Mesothelioma is a cancer of the lining of either the lungs (pleura) or abdomen (peritoneum). Mesothelioma is almost always fatal, with approximately 20% of patients alive 5 years after the diagnosis and less than 1% alive 10 years after the diagnosis. Since asbestos disease is associated with exposure, it has become the source of significant litigation.
